How to spot an Avon email scam

The internet is full of scammers
This is a fact, and it's just something a person has to accept and live with. Don't ignore it.
If you're an Avon Rep, and especially if you have an online store, your email address will be in the public domain, which means scammers will be able to find you. Unfortunately, it means you have to take every single contact request with a grain salt and a critical eye, and you can't be impulsive or greedy. Fortunately, though, there's a lot of commonalities in the emails they send, since most are simple copy-and-paste jobs, and you should be able to tell when someone is legit or not.
Look out for the following:
- Someone who lives in another state, but is coming through on "a showbiz" or who represents themselves as a "retail buyer" (which is against the contract you signed, anyway), or who is out of the country for now and still wants to order.
- Someone with a name and a bunch of numbers as their email address. Pay attention to the names used; scammers will often change the number part, but keep the same name or something similar.
- A sob story about being deaf / blind, a single mother, and having lost someone in an accident recently-- especially if they claim all three. It's playing on your sympathies so you won't question them when they say strange things.
- Really poor grammar and punctuation, like they barely know English. Most of the scams come from overseas.
- Someone who asks to pay through their boss's check or a finance department, or who wants a lot of personal information to send you a money order-- it's all an attempt to get enough info to steal your identity and / or get you blamed for check fraud. They'll send three or four times what they owe you, then ask you to wire it back to them. If you do, you'll find out in a few days that the check was reported stolen and you didn't actually have the money in the bank to wire to them, and now you're out thousands of your own dollars, because the wire will still go through.
- Large orders between 200 and 600$ of the most expensive products in multiple quantities. They want to sell your products overseas, AND get your money.
- All the emails will have similar text. The names, businesses and products might change, but the instructions and the explanations will almost be identical.
- A request to have some third-party mail courier pick up the order and send it somewhere else. It will usually be overseas, or somewhere rural like West Virginia. If they can't pick it up and pay you in person, you don't need their business.
What to do about it
You'll likely get a lot of these emails, so it's easiest if you fight form letters with form letters. Write up a polite reply message for when you get contact emails, and anticipate what they're going to say: direct them to shop through your e-rep site, tell them you can't accept credit cards except through the site's system, and you'll only accept checks in person, with ID, phone number and contact info (and maybe something to make scammers nervous, like a thumb-print or something). If they aren't local, which they never are, tell them they can only order through your site, and you'll gladly help them find someone local to where they live. Send out the same answer every time, so when you get hit multiple times by one scammer, they know you're onto them. Most won't contact you again when you say you can't help them, but they may try under a different name; tell them the same thing.
If it's not a scammer, they'll be reasonable and try to work with you without offering to have a third party send you the money or asking you to run a credit card for them because they can't figure it out.
Keep all your correspondence in case it's needed to prove that they're scammers or that you were scammed.
Go online and post articles like this one so people can find the information, and report the emails and details to scam-watching sites-- do a quick google search and you'll find dozens of them.
If you already accepted a check from one, check the name on the check against the name they gave you and any contact info you have on them-- if it's something totally unlikely to need a bunch of makeup, if the names don't match, if the amount is way too much, and / or if the address is from somewhere different from where they said they're from, it's a scam and it's probably stolen or forged. Hand it over to the bank or to the local FBI office with a full report of where it came from. If you've already deposited it, wait a minimum of three weeks-- it will always bounce or un-deposit if it's fake, and turn it in to the bank then, too. But you shouldn't have gotten that far, if you're not taken in!

Denis Wilson, Lola Maze, Shawn Morgan, Linda Collins (twice under different emails), Pat Smith (twice, under different emails), Tina Smith, Rita Perry, Mandy Davies, Tera Sommers, Lucy Jess, Lisa Dave, Jim Walton, and Renee Walker. See how some of them sound weird? And some are similar to others? Yeah, scammers!

I recieved an email from Lizy Allen and didn't realize it was a scam until I emailed her and placed the order. Luckily I was able to cancel the order before it went through. But, unfortunately I did give her my address. Could she do something bad with it? I know she has my phone number due to having it on my website. I am really hoping she can't do anything with it. I emailed Avon and will also be talking with my local PD and may even call FBI.

We received several emails from a Tara Henrick and a Lizzy Allen, both proclaiming to be out of town models wishing to order AVON. This Tara sent us a check from a Elizabeth Santana, and it was being tracked for a "Lizzy Allen". I guess they couldnt keep their alias's together and mixed them up.
I spoke with the Stewart Talent Agency ion Chicago and they are aware of the scams and have posted a warning on their internet site.
We received a check in the mail and didnt even open it. please get with your local law enforcement agencies to see if they can help but these morons behind bars.
OMG I wish I had done my research. I got an email from Melanie Hoskins and I fell for it. Im not in debt and lost my money I had been saving. Well Im going to the police dept and I already reported with Money gram. Im a new representative and had no clue this was going on. I think I will NOT be selling Avon anymore.

I have received several of these emails unfortunately. Most of them, I have noticed, are a combination of a woman's name and a man's name. MELISSA GEORGE for example. The very first one was from a "modeling agency" in California that was coming to my area for a photo shoot and wanted me to use a third party courier service. I sent an email back saying if they were truly interested in ordering from me and since they were so far away it would be more advantageous for them to order from my personal site and have the products shipped directly to them that way they can make sure they are the correct shade/scent. Haven't heard back since.

This is one that I got about 3 weeks ago. I did fall for it untill she told me the check that was sent to me was for $3000 and her order was only $70. After I took the check to the bank she kept texting me telling me to cash the check and send her the money. I told her that she needed to call the bank about it when I didnot send her the money she then sent me an email telling me that the FBI were coming to my door and that she knows my address and all my info. It has been a week since I got that email and nothing has happened.

She said she was in the United Kingdon on vacation and that she was having trouble using her credit card on my website.I have to admit I almost fell for it.She sent me the money order but instead of 1 there were 2 for $998 each,thats when I thought there was something funny about it.She wanted me to deduct the $237 for the products and then inmediatelly send her the rest trough western union.She kept saying go cash the funds,when are you going to cash the funds.So be carefull everyone this is the information that I have on her. Melanie Hoskins emailed me too. Apparently M&G Modeling & Promotions from Atlanta, GA is coming to my town in late March. And what a surprise, there must be NO Avon reps in Atlanta or anyone who can sell them a hairbrush and other fairly common and trivial items. Nice try.
Normally the scam emails are easier to spot because the person is trying to order a very large quantity of items. This one, although still suspicious, was a bit more subtle and because of that may be likely to fool more people. She wanted to order reasonable quantities and this made me think that maybe there was slim chance that the request was legitimate.

Thanks, when fedex delivers, I plan on not accepting it. Hope I can do that. Have to admit, I've never not accepted a delivery. It's usually something I want. lol
If you do get to where you get a check, chances are it's a forgery; my bank wouldn't take the one I got the first time this happened. Even if they do, the whole thing is that the money isn't really there: you get this exorbitantly over-paid check, you deposit it, they request the difference back and you send it, and then a few days later, the stolen check is canceled or bounces, and you've really just given them hundreds of dollars of your own money. By then, they're long gone.
So don't do it!

I just got this from the first person that contacted me. I believed her story and sent her my contact address along with total for her order. I learned about the scam after receiving this one when I received 3 more. Didn't send my info to them.
What should I do if I get this check, just ignore it? Write her back and say I know it's a scam and she's not getting her money back? lol Tell her I turned the check in to the police? Can they send someone to threaten me?

But there is a big problem,cos she informed me that she sent out the whole amount she was owing me instead of her to just send you the amount for the item i am Buying from you,i was so mad at her when i heard this cos i don't know if my money will be safe with you when you get it...But I do believe it will because the Bible ask to trust others so I will trust You. I wanted her to send the remaining of the funds to my Daughter whose wedding is coming up in 2 weeks...I just don't know what to do cos i am totally confused,please ..may i know if my money will be safe with you when you get the payment?..will You be able to get the remaining of my money sent to my daughter after you might have deducted your amount for the item?....Because I need you to have the remaining money sent to my her as soon as you receive the payment so that she get get her wedding stuffs.

Sorry this is long, but I've received two, probably three of these within a two week span. I received something from Melanie Hoskins, also, just on the 25th, same phone number. The grammar was fine but it kept nagging at me that something wasn't right about it. I decided to Google the modeling agency and came to this site. Thanks for the head's up.
It's really discouraging when you're just starting out and are excited about working with Avon and get inquires on your website and they turn out to be scams.
I've also just received something from Lizy Allen, lizyalleno21@gmail.com three days before this.
And jennifercollins29@gmail.com. The person called themselves Mrs. Allen in reply to my offer to help her. Said she was deaf and her regular Avon lady became ill with breast cancer and left the business and she was looking for another rep. Also said she would refer her other deaf friends. She said she couldn't order from the website because she didn't have a credit card but would send a certified bank check or money order, which ever I prefer. She wanted my contact info in order to send the check. (i gave it. it sounded plausible (had a funny feeling, though, about the fact that her name was so different from the email address). She emailed an order which totaled a little over $200. When she said she'd let me know when she put the check in the mail, I told her when it needed to arrive to get submitted and that it needed to clear before I would submit the order. That's where I've left it. It sounded kind of legit, but there are certain things that are similar to what you all are saying so it, too, is most likely a scam.
Thanks again for the heads up. I won't be excited about all the inquiries anymore.

For that reason, I do not send any orders without having payment first. I'm sure a fine business such as yours has someone on payroll who would consent to using a credit or debit card on my website, which is the safest and only way to order from me.

I received a contact me request from a Natalie Hewitt and after I placed the order I realized it was a scam. "She" bought 110 dollars worth of products and was in quantities of three and didn't order all of the products mostly needed for a photo shoot. I was almost a victim of this scam as well. Thank God my Husband was the one who told me to search, after we got a big check in the mail. My brother a techi I'd call him, informed me that a group called the Mexican Mafia sends out these emails, wanting small priced items versus a few expensive ones. He told me to check my computer to see if there were any odd things or suspicious. And low and behold I found this Reina Bentley who send me one of those emails apparently was able to break through my fire wall and get themselves added to my Yahoo Messenger list. Now that sucks. This reina bently just scammed me. She also ordered tassel tastic bags and mark super cosmetic bags and elephant necklesses I also should have went with my gutt and not believed her but I didn't I got the check and it was a large amount I used my personal money to send her those items and I went to my bank and found out it was a fake check thank goodness for my bank they called the post office and explained the situation and the post office still had my package

I was contacted by email from a Dacie Hoskins and I took her order it was around $60 & she said a check will be sent to me. I didn't know she was a scammer & she also signed up on my site. What made me look into this is it just didn't seem right & why not order from site but I overlooked it & said to self some people want to talk to a person it's more personal that way. But now I know & the next time I'll be way more careful & when order come I'll send it back. I got an email from Dacie Hoskins.. i actually received a checked today.... I actually didn't think to look this person up first.. So this morning, something told me to google this person and thats when i found out it was a scam. i responded to her and told told her to have the fed package retuned to sender, haven't heard from her.
I was almost a victim of this scam as well. I am so happy that God provided me with enough intellect to listen to my intution.
"Dacie Hoskins" almost had me.
I am Avon Rep.I got scam customer mail.first one I didnt know scam I gave order after 3 days learned scam customer.I called Avon customer services learned delivery information.I changed delivery option.Scam customer orders came to my address.I return back Avon comp.
After 1 monht I got 1 more scam mail.I didnt answer.

I just got one for an Dacie Hoskins as well. It makes you want to find them and give them what they deserve. I thought the email sounded funny, I am glad my hunch was right and did a google search. Thanks everyone for the posts.
Just like Cyndi, I also had a order from Dacie Hoskins in the amount of $55.00. Fortunately, I also checked with my bank, this was a check from her "sponsor" out of Washington state, but the Fed Ex was addressed from New Hampshire. I knew this was a scam when it was addressed from two different states and was told to keep $70 instead of the $55 for the order and send the rest back via western union to a James in Monroe, Ga. I emailed her today and haven't heard a response back, probably never will. BEWARE of the scammers.

I recieved e-mails very similar to the ones listed. My original contact with this person came from my Avon web site. Her name is Dacie Hoskins.Info@jide.com. She said she was from a modeling company from GA, and they were going to be in Roswell,NM for photo shoot, and she wanted to order some products. She ordered 83.24 worth of products. She said I would recieve payment by FedEx courier, but that a mistake had been made and the travelling funds had been put in with my Avon check. She wanted me to remit the excess funds through Western Union to a James Roberts in Monroe,GA. I told her I did not feel comfortable with doing that and I would send the check back to her voided. She became adamant that I would set them back. I notified the bank where this check for 14500.00 originated. They said it was a scam and not to cash the check. I have notified the police dept in GA, and CO where the return address on FedEX envelope was. The name on that envelope was Justin Bruner, and the name on the check was Brenda Coats. The police told me that it is a Fed Govt responsibility and they don't get involved unless it's over 15,000.00. This is a shame, because these people must be stopped. I am only out an 83.00 Avon order, but it could have been worse. After I told Dacie, I would not the check on the recommendation of the bank, I have not heard from her.Beware Avon reps this is a big problem!

I have been getting a ton of these! I actually ordered the first set's products. :( now I'm going to have to return $80+ worth of stuff. Oh well, you live and you learn.
What's really ridiculous is that these are all basically the same email, which means someone is passing this stuff around with the contact info to reach all of us sellers, but no one is telling the next guy that we won't play along! I mean, someone who's a perpetual dead end is just a waste of their time if they're really trying to get money and / or product off us.

Be aware that there are some very ruthless people who will try anything to get your money!

I've shared the e-mails these crooks and I have engaged in. I've tried to keep them entertained so that I can figure out where they are and so I can report them to the FBI... After the last e-mail we traded they have discontinued all contact. Guess they realized I caught on!

ive gotten pat smith, linda collins (twice), and some other smith person...i forget. sigh. wish real customers would ask for some product information.
First this guy said he was coming to my area (New Hampshire) then when I asked him for contact and shipping info, he gives me a modeling agency in California and an address. A google search shows that the company is real. This is about the 20th time this has happened, so I wanted to see how far he would try to take it. I told him if he wanted shipping to California, just find a rep there. He said he had no problem paying for shipping and would need the items by next week. I instructed him to overnight a postal money order to my PO Box. Of course, he doesn't want to use the postal service, and asked for my address for UPS. I told him sorry I don't accept deliveries at home. Then he was gone! What surprised me was that he actually used proper grammar and spelling. They usually come across like english is a second language. The last one that tried, I actually told them try using spellcheck and proper English. Maybe it was the same idiot! ha ha
